IEEE P2025.1 - Standard for Consumer Drones: Taxonomy and Definitions

This standard specifies the taxonomy and definitions for consumer drones. Drones are also known as Unmanned Airborne Vehicles (UAV), Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), Remotely Piloted Airborne Vehicles (RPAV), or Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS). This standard focuses on drones that are available in consumer markets and are used for consumer or commercial purposes.

Thanks to the technology advances in consumer electronics, drones are becoming more and more popular in consumer markets. While drones enable new application scenarios and provide new conveniences in our daily lives, they also raise new concerns in multiple aspects such as privacy and security. Rulemaking is expected to be an approach to solve some of the concerns, but standardization is also needed to help enforce the regulations by technical means. In some cases or some regions, standards for consumer drones might provide the most efficient way to facilitate a healthy growth of the industry and reduce or eliminate the negative impacts.

This project is especially needed to distinguish consumer drones from other kinds of drones (e.g. military drones), and also divide consumer drones into various sub-categories. Based on the taxonomy and definitions provided by this project, other projects in the P2025 family would be able to clearly and precisely address standardization needs in multiple aspects of consumer drones.

Established by the IEEE-SA Standards Board and being supported by over 30 IEEE Societies and Councils, IEEE SCC42 Transportation (IEEE Standards Coordinating Committee on Transportation) leads the coordination of IEEE standardization activities for technologies related to transportation, especially in the areas of connected vehicles, autonomous/automated vehicles, inter- and intra-vehicle communications, and other types of transportation electrification. These technologies include but are not limited to Mobile Apps, Sensor Networks, and Communications that allow human to vehicle, vehicle to vehicle, vehicle to infrastructure, vehicle to platform, and vehicle to everything exchange of information and data. Where standardization needs exist, the SCC will develop guides, recommended practices, standards, and common definitions of terms.

This standard specifies the taxonomy and definitions of terms used in the 2040 family of connected, automated and intelligent vehicles standards. This standard will facilitate cross-domain discussions and collaborations by defining different types/levels of connectivity, automation and intelligence as well as their various combinations applied to vehicles.

This standard defines an overarching framework of testing and verification of the connectivity, automation and intelligence aspects and their combination for connected, automated and intelligent vehicles. This standard identifies existing applicable standards for testing and verification, and defines the integration of these standards into a consistent testing environment.

With major advances in information, communications, electric and electronic technologies, vehicles are becoming more connected, automated and intelligent. This trend is predicted to be one of the most significant drivers of transformation and growth in transportation and automotive markets. This is an evolving industry and there are currently no agreed upon requirements or standards for the testing and verification of connected, automated and intelligent vehicles. The outcome of this project will be to develop requirements for the testing and verification of connected, automated and intelligent vehicles. This will include the technical requirements for testing, the processes required and identify gaps in the existing standards that will need to be addressed for testing purposes.

(Cybersecurity in Transportation Task Force)

This task force is responsible for assisting IEEE SCC42 in analyzing cybersecurity risks in transportation with respect to mobile device/wearable to vehicle, vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication as well as communication between control systems inside of the vehicle. Furthermore ongoing or planned standardization activities in the cybersecurity domain will be assessed for relevance for transportation applications.

(Road Electrification Task Force)

This task force is responsible for assisting IEEE SCC42 in understanding the potential of existing or emerging technologies relevant for road electrification in particular in combination with connected vehicle and automated driving technologies. Based on the technology assessment in selected IEEE research publications as well as other scientific sources standardization aspects are identified that could be led by IEEE.

IEEE TECHNICAL ACTIVITIES VOLUNTEER TRAINING WORKSHOP:
PRO-ACTIVE VOLUNTEERING IN IEEE TECHNICAL COMMUNITIES AND ACTIVITIES

IEEE has identified that many Volunteers seek to gain a better understanding of available opportunities and common practices, in order to become more active within the association. To meet this need, IEEE is pleased to announce a FREE one-day workshop, aimed at training and empowering Volunteers to play a bigger role in building IEEE technical communities, organizing successful IEEE activities, and training future generations of Volunteers.

The workshop will be led by a senior member of IEEE Volunteer leadership with support from IEEE staff, and is designed to provide attendees with information and tools in the following areas of IEEE activity:
- IEEE mission, vision and organization
- Global and Local Technical Communities
- Conferences
- Publications
- Educational Activities

All participants will be given a certificate of attendance, and will then be expected to increase and expand their proactive roles within the above areas of IEEE focus, becoming prominent IEEE Volunteer leaders, both globally and locally. In addition, they will be encouraged to replicate this training activity in their local communities, passing this knowledge on to other potential Volunteer leaders, to cultivate a strong, knowledgeable, and engaged Volunteer base.

This workshop is open to everybody including postgraduate students, government employees, university faculty, researchers, and industry professionals who wish to become more involved in IEEE technical communities and volunteering activities.
