BIH-YUAN KU received the B.S. degree from National Taiwan University in 1984, and M.S. and Ph.D. degree from Cornell University in 1993, all in Electrical Engineering. He is currently an associate professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering, National Taipei University of Technology, Taipei, Taiwan.
His major research interests and experiences are in the electric field of railroad transportation systems, including train performance simulation and computation, traction power analysis, rail potential and stray current analysis, electric transient study and analysis, and related topics. In addition to conducting various research projects he also consulted on several major rail line projects in Taiwan, including the Blue Line Project of Taipei Metro Transit System, the electrification of Eastern Link Line of Taiwan Railway Administration, and most recently, the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport Transit Line Project linking to downtown Taipei.
Dr. Ku is a Senior Member of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society(IEEE-VTS). He has been an active member of the Land Transportation Division(LTD) since 2003, serving on the LTD Executive Committee and the Planning Committee of the Joint Rail Conference including as the General Co-Chair of the 2007 and 2010 Joint Rail Conference. He still serves as a Track Chair for the upcoming 2013 Joint Rail Conference to be held in Knoxville, Tennessee, USA. He was elected by the Board of Governors of the IEEE-VTS as the Vice President Land Transportation of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society from 2007 to 2010. In addition, He served as an Associate Editor, Transportation Systems for the IEEE Vehicular Technology Magazine, published by the IEEE-VTS, since its inception in 2006. His dedication to the IEEE-VTS sponsored conferences is as the Transportation Track Chair for the IEEE 68th Vehicular Technology Conference(VTC2008-Fall), the IEEE 69th Vehicular Technology Conference(VTC2009-Spring), and the IEEE 71st Vehicular Technology Conference(VTC2010-Spring).
Dr. Ku was elected to the Board of Governors of the IEEE-VTS as a voting member for the term from 2011 to 2013. He is also with the Traction Power Substation Subcomittee of the IEEE Rail Transportation Standards Committee sponsored by the IEEE-VTS. He also served on the Standards Committee for the procurement of Taiwan’s new high speed rail trains and Taiwan Railway Administration’s new commuter trainsets.
